Conquer Your Financial Problems One Bite At a Time

by Alonzo. on September 24, 2011

Sometimes it appears hopeless.

Who has gotten tired of living paycheck to paycheck, avoiding creditor phone calls, or robbing Peter to pay Paul?

Feeling overwhelmed is natural. It’s tempting to bury our heads in the sand, throw in the towel and resign ourselves to the fact that our situations will never change.

But don’t let the enormity of the job ahead derail your dreams of financial success.

What’s The Best Way To Eat An Elephant?

Perhaps you’ve heard the riddle, how do you eat an elephant?

The answer: One bite at a time.

It’s easy to get intimidated by an enormous task like fixing your finances, but like eating an elephant, simply tackle it one bite at a time. The road to financial freedom is traveled step by step.

You Don’t Have to Fix All Your Financial Problems Overnight

We live in a quick fix, gotta-have-it-now society. Lose weight in one week. Get instant abs. Same day face lifts, instant video downloads, overnight shipping, and the like have become the norm. We expect instantaneous results. Slow and steady no longer wins the race.

As a result, we’ve become inpatient. We make the mistake of thinking that we can fix everything overnight. This creates stress, worry, and anxiety.

But when it comes to something as overwhelming as fixing our financial woes, slow and steady does win the race.

Take It One Step At a Time

Instead of worrying about everything and doing nothing. Take focused action on a few things at a time.

Tackle one area of your finances. Once you’ve mastered that, move on to another. Here are a few examples of how you can slowly but surely put your financial house in order.

Develop one new financial habit a month. Start taking your lunch to work two days a week. Once you’ve mastered this habit, move on to another. Before long, you’re realizing truly amazing savings.

Start off small, then improve. Start finding ways to save $1 a day. Simple enough. At the end of the day put your $1 savings into a special jar. The next month, find a way to save $2 a day. The third month …. you get the picture.

Slowly wean yourself off of your addictions. If clothes are your Achilles’ heel, slowly force yourself to reduce your clothing budget. At the beginning of each month, set aside money for clothes in an envelope. Once the money for clothes is spent, it’s gone. Every month thereafter, reduce the amount you place in your clothes envelope, thereby reducing your clothing budget. The same can be done for entertainment, dining, or any other financial trouble spot.

Don’t be intimidate by your financial situation.

The key to solving your financial problems is taking it one step at a time.

Learn to eat your elephant bit by bit.
